Stress Therapy in Calgary

Are you struggling to manage stress?

You are feeling so much pressure to be at your best all of the time and don't see a way out.

At work, at home, and in life, you feel like the world expects so much from you and it is negatively impacting your life. It’s hard to deal with it all.

You have a few coping strategies that seem to help, not all of which are healthy, but no matter what you do, you still feel overwhelmed and have a hard time managing stress.

You feel like you are falling apart under the weight of it all. You know you need to slow down, but it seems impossible with all of the responsibilities on your plate.

The truth is, similar to anxiety, stress does have its place. If we are in danger, our body triggers stress hormones that engage our fight-or-flight response. The fight-or-flight response helps keep us safe in dangerous situations.

Our modern life does have serious situations that justify our stress response. However, on a day-to-day basis, we don’t face severe threats like we did 1000s of years ago. Yet, our stress response is still triggered. The only difference now is we are triggered by work, family life, road rage, financial pressure, the news, social media, etc.

The constant triggering of our stress response can create adverse effects on our mental health, emotional wellness, and on our physical health.

Not to mention, we live in an era that glorifies working long hours and pushing ourselves to the limit. Our “hustle” culture is particularly detrimental to men. As men, we wear our stress like a badge of honour and typically don’t discuss it or process it. We soldier on and tend to work even harder.

Symptoms of Stress

  • Easily agitated and frustrated.
  • Feeling overwhelmed and like you are out of control.
  • Struggling to relax and quiet your mind.
  • Low self-esteem, feeling lonely, worthless, and depressed.
  • Outbursts of anger.
  • Frequently get sick.
  • Headaches, body aches, and tense muscles.
  • Inability to focus.
  • Forgetful and disorganized.
  • Increased use of alcohol, drugs, or cigarettes.

You think to yourself...

  • I’ve got to push myself in order to be successful.
  • I will relax on the weekend or when I go on vacation.
  • Nobody does anything right. That’s why I need to do it.
  • I can handle the pressure. I just need to work through it.
  • I’m fine.

Occasional stress is nothing to be concerned about. It is when it becomes ongoing and chronic that it can amplify health problems. Be on the lookout for the symptoms of chronic stress and also how to manage stress. Like most things in life, it is all about how you manage them.
